The HSS120 horizontal sand mill is a 120-litre production grinder designed for paint and pigment factories in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt and Ghana, where abrasive extenders, variable power quality and long service intervals between imported spare parts all shape the design brief. The 55kW drive turns a hardened disc rotor inside a chamber fitted with replaceable wear inserts, so that the parts which erode in calcium carbonate and talc systems can be renewed without replacing the whole chamber. Output ranges from 160 to 1400 kg/h, covering emulsion paint, textured coating, putty paste and pigment concentrate production on a single machine. A variable frequency drive provides soft starting so the mill can run from a generator without tripping, and the electricals accept 380 to 415V with a tolerance band suited to unstable supply. The integrated double mechanical seal is a cartridge type that a plant maintenance team can change with standard tools, and the wear parts list is deliberately short so that a local workshop can hold stock. In the workshop it runs as a horizontal agitator bead mill, and every sand mill duty from pre-dispersion to fine grinding passes through the same closed chamber.
Key Features- Replaceable Wear Inserts: the chamber areas that erode first are separate inserts, so abrasive extender systems cost a set of liners instead of a new chamber
- Hardened Disc Rotor: surface-hardened discs hold their profile in calcium carbonate and talc systems, preserving fineness repeatability across long production runs
- Genset-Friendly Starting: variable frequency drive with soft start limits inrush current, so the mill starts reliably on captive generation without tripping the site supply
- Wide Voltage Band: 380-415V, 50Hz electricals tolerate the voltage swing common on industrial estates and accept a stabiliser connection without rewiring
- Locally Serviceable Seals: the cartridge seal is changed from the front with standard tools, and the seal faces are a stocked item rather than a factory-order part
- High Solids Capability: the closed chamber and media loading handle high-solids putty and filler paste without starving the grinding zone

African paint producers use the HSS120 horizontal sand mill for emulsion paint, gloss enamel, textured and waterproof coating, putty paste and pigment concentrate. It is normally installed with a high-speed disperser for pre-mix and one or two let-down tanks, and it can be run as a circulation mill or in a single pass depending on the fineness target. Because imported spare parts carry long lead times in the region, the design favours standard bearings, a cartridge seal and a short wear-part list, and the supplied documentation includes a maintenance schedule written for a plant without a dedicated millwright. Factories that also produce pigment paste for resale use the same chamber with a smaller media size to reach a finer Hegman reading.
Packaging & Quality AssuranceEach HSS120 horizontal sand mill is built in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility and load-tested for 72 hours on a reference paint paste, with vibration, seal leakage, bearing temperature and fineness logged in a test report that ships with the machine. Chambers are pressure tested, rotors are balanced, and wear inserts are checked for fit and hardness before assembly. Delivery includes electrical schematics, a cooling circuit diagram, an English operation and maintenance manual, a spare-part list with part numbers and material certificates for wetted parts. The 12-month warranty excludes media and wear parts, wear parts remain available for ten years, and remote commissioning over video covers alignment, media charging, first-batch fineness validation and operator training, with an on-site option for plants installing their first production mill.
