The HSS40 horizontal sand mill is a 40-litre nano grinding machine aimed at battery material developers and ink formulators in Korea and Japan who need a narrow particle size distribution rather than maximum tonnage. A 30kW drive spins a disc rotor through 0.3 to 0.6 mm zirconia media, generating a high energy density in a small working volume and reaching median particle sizes of 200 to 500 nanometres on cathode, anode and conductive carbon slurry. The chamber and rotor can be supplied with ceramic or polyurethane lining so that iron and other metal pickup stays within battery specification, and jacketed cooling holds outlet temperature to within about 1.5 degrees of set point, protecting binder systems that gel when they overheat. Output runs from 60 to 600 kg/h depending on solids loading and target fineness, which covers pilot quantities as well as small production campaigns. Because specific energy per litre matches the larger horizontal sand mill chambers, a validated 40L trial can be scaled to production without redeveloping the dispersion curve. In the workshop it runs as a horizontal agitator bead mill, and every sand mill duty from pre-dispersion to fine grinding passes through the same closed chamber.
Key Features- Nano Range Grinding: 0.3-0.6 mm zirconia media in a high-energy disc rotor gives D50 values of 200-500 nm on hard carbon and ceramic particles
- Low Metal Pickup: ceramic or polyurethane-lined wetted parts keep iron and chromium contamination below battery-grade limits, with lining certificates supplied
- Tight Temperature Control: jacketed cooling with a small working volume holds outlet temperature within about 1.5 degrees, which prevents binder gelation and viscosity drift
- Narrow Particle Distribution: a closed chamber with controlled residence time narrows the D90 to D50 ratio, the parameter that governs coating quality and cycle life
- Recipe Transferability: specific energy per litre matches larger chambers in the same series, so a 40L validated batch transfers to 120L or 280L without reformulation
- Clean Drain and Flush: sloped discharge, drain port and full-flow flush connection support a documented cleaning procedure between formulations

Korean and Japanese customers use this horizontal agitator bead mill for cathode and anode slurry preparation, conductive carbon dispersion, inkjet pigment concentrate milling and fine chemical suspensions. It works as a circulation mill in a loop with a holding tank, or as a single-pass unit in a continuous line where the flow rate is set by the target fineness. Battery laboratories value the 40L volume because it produces enough material for pouch-cell or cylindrical-cell validation without committing a full production line, while ink developers use the same chamber for carbon black and organic pigment work. Plants preparing for automotive or ESS cell qualification typically request lining certificates, cleaning validation records and particle size curves with every delivery.
Packaging & Quality AssuranceEvery HSS40 horizontal sand mill is built under an ISO 9001:2015 quality system and load-tested for 72 hours with a reference ceramic slurry; the test report records fineness curve, outlet temperature, seal leakage and vibration. Rotors are dynamically balanced, chambers are pressure tested, and lined versions are inspected for lining thickness and surface finish before assembly. The delivery package includes an electrical schematic, cooling circuit diagram, operation and maintenance manual, recommended spare-part list, material and lining certificates, and particle size data from the factory test. A 12-month warranty covers the machine excluding media and wear parts, spare parts are held for ten years, and remote commissioning covers alignment, media charging, first-batch fineness confirmation and operator training.
