The HSS20 horizontal sand mill is a 20-litre closed-chamber grinding unit built for solvent-based ink and paint producers in Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, where explosive atmospheres and low winter temperatures both have to be designed for. The 22kW drive, flameproof motor and flameproof control cabinet are matched to Ex d IIB T4 requirements, and the frame carries a copper grounding bar plus anti-static piping so that solvent transfer, filling and cleaning stay inside a defined safety envelope. Product enters the closed grinding chamber, is agitated by a wear-resistant disc rotor against 0.8 to 2.0 mm media, and leaves through a dynamic gap screen at up to 300 kg/h with a fineness down to 20 microns. An integrated double mechanical seal with barrier fluid separates the drive from the product, which matters when the same mill runs different solvent systems through the week. For sites where the hall drops below freezing in winter, a chamber heating jacket and a low-temperature lubricant package allow a safe cold start instead of a forced warm-up with hot solvent. In the workshop it runs as a horizontal agitator bead mill, and every sand mill duty from pre-dispersion to fine grinding passes through the same closed chamber.

Typical duties include milling pigment concentrates for solvent inks, grinding alkyd, nitro and polyurethane wood coatings, and dispersing carbon black and organic pigments where colour strength has to be reproduced exactly. Because many CIS workshops combine several product families in one hall, the compact 20L unit is often installed next to a larger mill and used for small orders, colour matching and pilot batches. The closed design also supports plants that are tightening solvent emission controls, since vapour release during grinding is limited to the seal faces and the small buffer volume.

Each HSS20 horizontal sand mill is assembled in an ISO 9001:2015 certified workshop, then run for 72 hours on a reference solvent ink with vibration, seal leakage, bearing temperature and outlet fineness logged in a shipment test report. Chambers are pressure tested, rotors are dynamically balanced, and flameproof components are supplied with their certificates so the customer can present them during a site inspection. Documentation covers an electrical schematic, a seal barrier-fluid diagram, an operation and maintenance manual in English, a spare-part list and material certificates for wetted parts.
